Endometrial osseous metaplasia is a conditioncharacterised by the presence of mature bone fragmentswithin the endometrium. It is rarely reported in humanbeings and other domestic mammals, but to the author’sknowledge has not previously been recognised in horses. This case describes a Thoroughbred broodmare presentedfor breeding evaluation 14 days postpartum. Noprevious reproductive abnormalities had been identified.Transrectal ultrasonography of the reproductive tractidentified multifocal, well-defined, irregular hyperechoicstructures with acoustic shadowing within the uterinewall. Following a single, unsuccessful, reproductive cycle, the fragments were manually removed. Histopathologyidentified osseous metaplasia and septic endometritis.A combination of intrauterine treatments wereimplemented, including lavage, infusion with both Nacetylcysteineand antibiotics. Chemical curettage wasperformed using an intrauterine kerosene infusion toremove the remaining microspicules and resolve theendometritis. The mare successfully conceived twinembryos. Following manual ablation of one conceptus, the remaining pregnancy was successfully carried toterm.
