Conformal hypofractionated radiotherapy for dogswith large adrenal tumours

Adrenalectomy has been recognised as the treatment ofchoice for adrenal tumours. However, excision of largetumours with or without vena caval tumour thrombi isdifficult. The purpose of this case series was to describethe use of 3D conformal hypofractionated radiotherapy forunresectable adrenal tumours (over 7cm long) in three dogs(bulldog, shih tzu and miniature dachshund). The tumourshad invaded the caudal vena cava in two of the dogs. Theirradiation protocols included 23.7Gy/three fractions/threeweeks or 26Gy/four fractions/four weeks. Following thetreatment, tumours in two cases showed a 34 and 40 percent reduction in size. No radiation-related adverse eventswere detected. Metastatic lesions developed in all cases. Theoverall survival in the three dogs was 19, 25 and 27 months.Therefore, 3D conformal hypofractionated radiotherapy cantreat adrenal tumours without severe complications, andprolong the survival in dogs.
