BHP Billiton reported a 2.4 percent decrease in its profit compared to a year ago in its results for the company's half-year ended 31 December 2007. The fall in profits is attributed to the company's higher interest payments and a negative impact from currency exchange rate movements. BHP's underlying earnings before interest and tax increased 5.4 percent as a result of record or equal production for seven major commodities. The company has indicated that it has significantly increased production across a further six commodities.
