Bone turnover markers: An appreciation of the contribution of Dr. P.D. Delmas

Dr. Pierre Delmas has made an outstanding contribution to the field of osteoporosis. He has published 67 original publications that have a citation count above 100 (Web of Science database (http://www. apps.isiknowledge.com)). It is of particular note that 30 of these articles concern bone turnover markers. His contribution to this field over the past 25 years has had a major impact.He published his first papers on bone turnover markers in 1982 and was interested in evaluating the effect of clodronate in patients with Paget's disease of bone or myeloma . It is of note that in 1982 the only markers available to him were total alkaline phosphatase (total ALP) and urinary hydroxyproline. Much of his work has resulted in the development and evaluation of assays of bone turnover markers (BTM) that are more specific to bone
