'Whole Farm' Approach to Improving Onion Production Paying Off

University of Utah researchers continue their 'vhole farm" approach to managing thrips and Iris yellow spot vims (IYSV) and grow higher yielding and higher quality onions. Theirs is a team approach that appears to be bearing fruit. Dan Drost, Ph.D., professor of horticulture and an Extension vegetable specialist, was the first presenter at the 2013 Utah Onion Association (UOA) Meeting, held Feb. 12 at the Bridgerland Applied Technology College Conference Room in Brigham City. The meeting was under the direction of Tyson Roberts, UOA president. "IYSV first showed up in Utah in 2008 during one of our field days," Drost said. "You could see the onion damage and see that it was variety specific. It was in early August and impacted yields." Showing slides tracing IYSV progress in Washington State, Drost traced the devastating impact the disease can have, particularly in September, when it was at its worst.
