RE: Validity and use of the UV index; The benefit of solar UVB in reducing risk of cancer is strong

The review of the validity and use of the UV Index largely dismissed the health benefits of solar UV irradiance for vitamin D production (Allinson et al. 2012). This result is not surprising since the UVI Working Group was comprised of those primarily concerned with reducing the risk of adverse effects of UV irradiance. However, the beneficial effects of vitamin D produced by solar UVB irradiance are much stronger than indicated in the paper.
