Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. (TYO:4005) and Microwave Chemical Co. Ltd. are aiming to establish a process for manufacturing turquoise hydrogen by fiscal 2026. The process would see hydrogen produced using microwaves to pyrolyze methane emitted from petrochemical plants and the like. The hydrogen can then be used to make chemicals and generate energy. Commercial production amounting to tens of thousands of tons per year is expected to begin in the early 2030s.
