With the Plastic Resource Circulation Act coming into effect in Japan, moves toward reducing plastic waste and boosting recycling are attracting attention. The country has been steadily implementing the recycling of PET beverage bottles, but the horizontal recycling rate still stands at just 15 percent. Horizontal recycling refers to recycling used products into the same products-such as making new PET bottles from used ones. Major companies in the Japanese beverage industry have been going through trial and error in aims of raising the horizontal recycling rate.
