An exact controllability result for the linear advection equation in the space L{sup}2(X) is proved for sufficiently large time T>0, where X is a compact set with Γ{sub}i = {partial deriv}X{sub}i andΓ{sub}o = {partial deriv}X{sub}o as the smooth and disjoint inflow and outflow boundaries, respectively. The advection is governed by a smooth vector field f{top}→ giving rise to dynamics which advects material from Γ{sub}i to Γ{sub}o in time T{sub}0.
