The year 2004 proved to be another good year for the Canadian appliance industry, with growth in the core five white goods products reaching a very solid 8.3 percent. This growth was led by ranges and wall ovens (+10.9 percent) and refrigerators (+9.6 percent), although all categories experienced growth. The microwave oven market performed strongly with shipments up by 13.2 percent compared to 2003 levels. The category achieved sales of almost 1.1 million units, well over the million unit target. Despite a very buoyant industry overall, retail was the driving channel for the appliance industry, as the builder segment was surprisingly soft, down by 3.9 percent.
