Nigeria presents gene editing regulatory guidelines

Nigeria’s NBMA (National Biosafety Management Agency) Act 2015 is to be amended to include emerging aspects of modern biotechnology such as synthetic biology and gene editing, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) reports. It cites NBMA director general Rufus Ebegba. He presented the guidelines earlier this month. “We seriously believe that gene editing needs adequate regulation so that products developed will not be harmful to the environment, human health, plants, and animals,” Dr Ebegba noted.
