Psychological Distress and Depressive Symptoms Are Associated with Lower Patient Satisfaction among Adults with Glaucoma

Patient satisfaction is increasingly used for clinician selection and reimbursement calculations. Little is known about how patient characteristics and baseline psychological status may affect patient satisfaction. Adults with glaucoma and comorbid depression and anxiety have increased risk of disease progression, making this an important topic of investigation. This study aimed to examine associations of patient satisfaction with psychological distress and depressive symptoms among adults with glaucoma. Data were analyzed from adults (age ≥ 18 years) in the 2004-2016 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), an annual survey of approximately 15 000 US households. The MEPS includes data on sociodemographic characteristics, self-reported medical diagnoses, and patient satisfaction.
