摘要

Jane Kelsey is, obviously only in a literary sense, a kind of Stephen King of academia. Her books are at once compelling and frequently scary as hell. The problem is, she doesn't write fiction. The plot revealed in her latest page-turner, The Fire Economy, will keep those who struggle to understand why the world is now a horror story with rapidly receding prospects of a happy ending, awake all night. Kelsey is Professor of Law at the University of Auckland and a no-nonsense, research-driven social commentator. The Fire Economy-shorthand for finance, insurance and real estate, the three elements which are, she argues, now the world's main sources and drivers of wealth creation - is a blistering expose of the socially destructive legacy of New Zealand's continuous, since 1984, commitment to neoliberal economics and politics.
