France struggles to find neonic alternatives for sugar beet yellowing

The French food safety agency, the Anses, claims to have identified 22 alternative solutions to neonicotinoid insecticides to combat aphids and yellowing virus in the country's sugar beet crops. But it says that most of the alternative solutions show "correct but insufficient efficiencies when used alone" to reduce the levels of damage to an acceptable economic threshold. The Agency recommends supporting the research and development effort to adapt the solutions identified on other crops to the case of sugar beet and to test combinations of solutions in an integrated pest management approach, as well as in terms of epidemiological surveillance.
