The French Minister of Agriculture, Julien Denormandie, has caused a stir in the country by stating that new breeding techniques (NBTs) are not genetically modi?ed organisms (GMOs). In an interview with French news service Reussir, the Minister says that NBTs are technologies that accelerate plant breeding, making it possible to spawn a strain earlier than it might have appeared naturally at some point. Mr Denormandie goes on to differentiate NBTs from a GMO, which he points is a plant and not a technique. A GMO is obtained by taking a gene from one species and transferring it to another, which does not happen in nature, he says.
