EU assessment guidelines OK for new SynBio crops, says EFSA

Existing EU requirements and guidelines will be adequate for the risk assessment of new genetically modified plants obtained through synthetic biology (SynBio), concludes the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This will be the case for products expected to reach the market within the next ten years, but guidance may need to be adjusted as SynBio techniques develop, it says in a new scientific opinion. A draft opinion was released for public comment last year.
