THE GENUSHOHERIA takes its name from the Maori houhere which means netted. The common names lacebark, ribbonwood or thousand jacket are on account of the many layers of lacy or netted inner bark. The Maoris used this inner bark as string or ribbon andearly settlers in New Zealand employed it as ornamental trimming on ladies' hats or basket work. A Hoheria tincture had a number of medicinal uses including soothing inflamed tissue or sore eyes and a cure for bronchitis. A drink was made from the barkand cabinet makers favoured the white wood.
