FIELD-COLLECTED seed can yield all sorts of surprises -apart from germination -often in the way of plants new to cultivation. One seed collection of an unknown shrub from the Andes of Ecuador or Peru, found its way into the capable hands of Roger Clark, recently celebrated as the first recipient of the Jimmy Smart Memorial Bursary, when he managed the nursery attached to Greenway garden, Devon, the one-time residence of Agatha Christie. In true Agatha Christie style, the waters were muddied when a Saturday boy repotted the seedlings and lost the only label, which held the collection details.
