Minerals Technologies to buy rival Amcol International

Minerals Technologies (MTI) will take over the US rival Amcol International. The two companies have signed a definitive merger agreement under which MTI will pay $45.75 per Amcol share. This puts the total purchase price for Amcol at $1.7bn. The transaction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2014. According to MTI, the acquisition will bring two of the world's leading suppliers of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and bentonite. The transaction will push sales of Mineral Technologies beyond $2bn, the company said in its press release dated 10 March. PCC and bentonite are used as additives and fillers in paper production and paper recycling, amongst other purposes.
