An Actinidia identified

An attractive climber grown diS Actinidia pilosula does not match that species. BjORN Alden discovers its true identity. THIS IS NOT JUST an account of the identity of a climber, wrongly named in European and US cultivation. It is also a story of a taxonomist's rather winding path to clarity. In the past 10 years . Actinidia, sold -as, A.pilosula, entered the Swedish nursery trade (it had been grown in the UK since the early 1990s). It was not lantil the spring of 2010 that I first noticed it, spotting a picture of it in a Swedish nxirseiy catalogue. It did not coincide with the A. pilosula that I remembered from earlier Chinese plant studies. I checked the accoxmt of Li etal (2007) and confirmed my suspicion that this male plant belonged to another species. The plant in question is referred to here as A.pilosula hort.
