Cledodendrum is a large genus striking plants with a history of over 250 years of cultivation in Europe, and much longer in their native lands. New research, focusing on the entire geographic range of the genus, is reshaping our perception of the group. Much of this follows the shifted family placement of the genus from Verbenaceae to Lamiaceae. This article outlines the rich historical background to their cultivation, highlights recent developments in our understanding, and provides an overview of the most commonly available and notable species. The following are the most commonly cultivated taxa: Clerodendrum bungei; C. chinense; C. paniculatum, C. quadriloculare, C. speciosissimum, C. * speciosum, C. splendens, C. thomsoniae, and C. trichotomum. Two candidates for reintroduction into western horticulture C. bethuneanum and C. rumphianum are also described.
