In 1809Joseph Knight wrote a book entitled Horticultural Essays. I. On the Natural Order Proteece. The book could not have been more highly anticipated or timely. Protea cultivation was at the height of fashion in Europe, yet the book caused controversy by pre-empting the publication of a paper on the matter by notable botanist Robert Brown. Knight's book was soon relegated to the most inaccessible shelves.
