Joe Elliott

Joe Elliott ran one of the most successful alpine nurseries of the 20th century. It ran from 1946 to 1986 and was located at Broadwell, near Stow-on-the-Wold in Gloucestershire.I did not encounter him until the late 1970s, when he came to my small Northamptonshire village's horticultural society to talk about alpines in the wild. Although I had little interest in the subject I was transfixed by his lecture, partly because his pictures of European alpines were really excellent. Apparently he wasrarely without a camera at his side, whether at work or away. However, it was his urbane charm and easy-going, witty delivery that captivated me most. His enthusiasm for plants shone through, but there was also an air of contentment too, and he patiently answered some rather banal questions with good grace. One of them may well have been mine!
