Gardening in a future climate

GARDENS MAY TAKE many forms, but all are important in supporting the natural environment by providing ecosystem services, such as mitigating urban flooding, providing food sources for wildlife and carbon sequestration. Since the publication of the Gardening in the Global Greenhouse report (UK Climate Impacts Programme 2002), there is now a greater degree of certainty in climate change projections. Changes are already being experienced, with 2016 being the wannest year on record (NASA 2017). Global projections for climate change are based on several emissions scenarios, and in the last decade the world has followed the highest emissions pathway.
