Technology feeds the frenzy to go further faster. There are times, though, when technology can be used to slow down the speed of operation. Variable-rate irrigation (VRI) lets farmers adjust the speed and application rates of center pivots based on what the field needs. "Using VRI, we've seen anywhere from a 5 bu. yield increase across the entire field to a 30-bu. or 40-bu. yield increase," says Nick Emanuel, founder and president of CropMetrics, a precision ag business.
