EU becomes a less attractive place for research

A couple of months ago,just after the rejection of the proposed new European constitution by first the voters of France and then those from the Netherlands,newspaper headlines were ablaze with questions as to what exactly these dramatic happenings meant.Was the refusal of two founder members of the EU to approve the constitution a sign of the end of the quest for "ever-closer political union" or a change of direction towards a more Anglo-American type of economic model? Such was the intensity of the debate at the time that it is hard to understand how what was a burning subject only a few months ago now seems no longer to warrant any significant press coverage.
