Going the Distance: A visit with Greenwings, a Dutch flower export company

Florists today have a lot of choices about where and how to purchase flowers. Most rely primarily on their local wholesaler, for good reasons. But the internet offers a variety of alternatives, including "farm-direct" flowers available through Teleflora's Stems&Bunches service (www.stemsandbunches.com). What are the pros and cons? And what happens when you order flowers shipped directly to you from as far away as Holland? Last November, Flowers& paid a visit to the Dutch flower export company Greenwings (www.greenwings.nl), one of the Stems&Bunches partners. Greenwings buys flowers from the Dutch auction at Aalsmeer, and also directly from selected growers, and repackages them for individual florists.
