Japan's hunger for coal continues

Coal consumption by the 10 companies comprising Japan's Federation of Electric Power Companies (FEPC) continues to remain high on the back of nuclear outages, with the Federation consuming 3.2 million mt in May, some 700,000 mt higher than May 2002's figure. Chubu Electric accounted for the largest increase in coal burn with the company consuming 750,000 mt, 330,000 mt more than the previous corresponding period.
