Radioactive Waste Management in Developing and Newly Industrialized Countries

Radioactive wastes are mostly produced in countries with military nuclear programmes. However, non-nuclear weapon countries, with solely commercial nuclear industries, also produce radioactive wastes. Moreover, uranium and thorium mining and milling wastes, as well as other kinds of low-level radioactive wastes like those resulting from radiological accidents, can also be found in developing and newly industrialized countries. The paper discusses the principal forms of lcw-level radioactive waste management in the latter countries. In addition, other aspects will be included into the discussion because social, economical and political implications cannot be ignored by responsible decision makers either in the nuclear industry or in the regulatory bodies.
