In his comments on our work (Teli el at., 1994; Teli and Chaudhari, 1996) Gerward (1996) pointed out that the volume of solution is not the sum of its components. This is true. However, the effect due to change in volume of the solution is negligiblysmall for dilute solutions and hence it was neglected in our work. The fractional molar volumes of solvent and solute, respectively, are V, and V_2. In Eq. (2) V < v_1 +v_2 because when mixed with the solvent the solute molecules occupy the space between the solvent molecules in the . solution as a result of which the volume of the solution decreases when volume v_2 is added to volume v_1.
