Operation of a Universal Test Unit for Planted Soil Filters - Planted Fixed Bed Reactor

A good deal of experience has already been acquired concerning the building of constructed wetlands [1-3]. Moreover, in 1998 the German Wastewater and Sewage Assoication (Abwassertechnische Vereinigung - ATV) published guidelines [4] for their design. These guidelines define kf values (saturated hydraulic conductivity) of between 10~(-4) and 10~(-3) m s~(-1) for the soil material, soil thickness of 0.5 m for horizontal flow and 0.8 m for vertical flow, and an area of 5 m~2 population equivalent~(-1) (minimum area: 20 m~2) for horizontal flow and 2.5 m~2 population equivalent~(-1) (minimum area: 10 m~2) for vertical flow plants.
