With automakers and financial institutions reducing or discontinuing new-vehicle leasing programs, dealers should plan for the impact on used-vehicle sales and profits: fewer off-lease vehicles to buy and fewer consumer leases. The industry is already reeling from automaker cutbacks on rental car programs, rising gasoline prices, and the failure of some automakers to adjust vehicle production, leaving dealers with too many gas-hungry vehicles and not enough fuel-efficient ones. With fewer rentals and off-lease units to buy and service, dealerships' service and parts department profitability and overall fixed coverage or fixed absorption will suffer. But there are some things dealers can do to ease the strain on the used-vehicle side.
