Artificial insemination (Al) has greatly reduced the number of boars needed for pig production worldwide. But it would be a mistake to imagine that effective insemination can be performed in all cases without the presence of a boar at herd level. Therole of good stimulation of the sow by factors relating to boar exposure cannot be over-emphasised, in the combination of practices that lead to successful Al.
