'Spelt1': a novel family of tandemly repeated DNA in cereals.

A novel family of tandemly repeated DNA in the cereal genome, Spelt1, was isolated and characterized in 13 Triticum spp., 10 Aegilops spp., barley and rye. This family accounts for ?% of A. speltoides DNA, one of the putative donors of the B genomeof hexaploid wheat. Genomes of the other cereal species, including those with AB, AG and ABD genome formulae, contained significantly lower amounts of Spelt1 repeats. RFLP analysis revealed 3 different types of Spelt1 sequence organization in Triticum and Aegilops genomes. Data indicating that Spelt1 can be used as a specific marker for A. speltoides chromosomes are presented.
