Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser creates a beam of concentrated light that is coherent (unlike the incoherent beams from a light bulb, which vary in their wavelength and direction). A laser is composed of an active medium (a material that is stimulated to emit light), a pumping mechanism (this maintains the stimulation, and in the Nd:YAG it is a doped-insulator utilizing flash, lamps with high injection currents), and an optical resonator (this produces the laser's unique characteristics). The laser works when the active medium (such as neodymium yttriumaluminum-garnet or Nd:YAG) within the laser is stimulated to emit light energy by an optical resonator (a pair of concave mirrors that amplify the rays), making the rays coherent, monochromatic, and unidirectional. The rays reach a steady state, and additional energy is used to maintain the laser output. The laser used in this report was a pulsed Nd:YAG laser,a Pulsing the beam in short bursts of energy eliminates dangerous heat buildup, and the pulses emitted by the laser used in this report can be adjusted from 10 to 30 times per second. This laser also utilizes a surprisingly low power. It can perform a multitude of procedures using power levels of less than three watts. Most medical lasers use between 10 to 90 watts. This unit also delivers its beam via a flexible, lightweight optical fiber, allowing easy access to difficult regions of the oral cavity.
