A quarter of all bearing failures in the cement industry are caused by faults related to lubrication, and these lead to substantial financial losses as a result of plant stoppages. To increase operational reliability and plant availability this fraction can be minimized by the correct choice of lubricants for the prevailing ambient and application conditions, and the correct specification of re-lubrication intervals and appropriate re-lubrication quantities. This article provides users with useful advice on the correct design of their lubrication supply systems. If this is combined with further measures which check the conditions of the bearings during operation, e.g. through vibration measurements, the risk of premature and unforeseen bearing failure can be considerably reduced.
