Regulatory agencies within Scotland use models to assess the cumulative effects of discharges from fish farms within water bodies, as part of their spatial planning process. These tools are consistent with recommendations (Henderson, Gamito, Karakassis, Pederson & Smaal 2001; OSPAR 2001) that suggest that regulatory models avoid unnecessary complexity. However, as the industry expands and diversifies, it becomes important to revisit these models to ensure that they are adequately predicting the environmental pressures arising from aquaculture.
