American College of Veterinary Behaviorists - 2003 Scientific Session Abstracts

The inaugural scientific session of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB) was held this year on July 20th in conjunction with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) conference in Denver. Papers were selected from among those submitted by members of the ACVB, residents, and veterinarians who are working in an ACVB-approved specialty training program. Abstracts have been peer reviewed by the program committee of the ACVB. As you can see from the variety of topics in the abstracts below, behaviorists are active in a wide range of scientific endeavors, from clinical practice to teaching and research, and with a variety of species including companion animals, farm animals, horses, and laboratory animals. This year's papers examined some of the common behavior problems of domestic animals including intraspecific aggression in dogs, cribbing in horses, the use of pharmacological intervention for psychogenic alopecia in cats, generalized anxiety disorders in dogs, the validity of assessment testing of shelter dogs, and grooming behavior in cats. In addition, Dr. Cirabassi's study of transdermal fluoxetine in cats begins to address the issue of how trans-dermal delivery of psychotropic drugs in cats correlates with oral dosing. We thank AAHA for the opportunity to publish these abstracts, since they provide practitioners with a unique opportunity to see the results of new research and learn more about the activities of the ACVB and its members. However, at the same time readers are reminded that these studies may not yet be complete and have not yet been subjected to the rigorous scientific review that would be required for publication as a peer-reviewed paper. Established in 1993, the ACVB now has 32 veterinarians that have achieved board certification to date, and seven residency programs at various veterinary colleges in North America. The board-certifying examination is given each fall for candidates who have met the qualifications to sit the examination.
