Oysters obtained from Parana, Brazil, in August 2005 were subjected to polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. The method could successfully discriminate between oyster species based on the digestion bands of the 16S mitochondrial DNA gene. This method would be useful in carrying out monitoring programmes to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of oysters, certification of the identity of oyster seeds and monitor the presence of the Pacific oyster C. gigas in order to prevent its indiscriminate cultivation and dissemination..
