Improving US-China trade relations create new opportunities for coal market participants

The US and China have made some progress in negotiations for the first time since the beginning of 2018. In mid-January, the parties signed the first phase of an agreement regulating trade between the countries. Given redirection of coal deliveries to Asian countries and a decline in sales to Europe, the deal creates new opportunities for US coal traders. Chinese importers will also benefit from the cooperation with US companies by expanding their coal purchase structure, especially given frequent issues with deliveries from Australia.
