Preliminary studies on bacterial diversity of cultured bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus from the Adriatic Sea.

A total of 161 bacterial isolates were obtained from 4 bluefin tuna from the Adriatic Sea in Croatia in spring and autumn from 2003-2005. The isolates included Moraxella, Pasteurella, Brevundimonas, Weeksella, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus spp. The predominant species (>10%) were Moraxella spp. (27.95%), S. xylosus (2.98%), S. lentus (15.53%) and Pasteurella spp. (11.18%). There was no difference between sampling periods. The highest number of isolates were obtained on the skin (93 strains), gills (42 strains) and internal organs. Skin isolates included S. xylosus (39.79%) and S. lentus (26.88%) and Moraxella spp. (33.33%). Gill isolates included Pasteurella (38.09%), Moraxella spp. (21.43%), B. vesicularis (21.43%) and W. virosa (19.05%). The number of isolates from the spleen, liver and kidneys (10, 8 and 8 strains, respectively) were lower. Pasteurella and Moraxella spp. were the most dominant isolates in the spleen and liver, while Klebsiella spp. was the most dominant in the kidneys.
