Two experiments were conducted to characterize the environmental cation requirements of Litopenaeus vannamei at 2 g/litre total dissolved salts, a concentration that might be economically viable to develop in inland ponds by addition of sea salt, brine or mixed salts. The survival, moulting and haemolymph osmolality of L. penaeus were examined. A third experiment was undertaken to determine if dietary salts affected the survival and growth of shrimp in low salinity environments. 128 and 42 shrimps were used in the survival and haemolymph osmolality experiments, respectively. L. vannamei survived and grew well in 2 g/litre sea salt. Mixed salt environment did not cause osmotic dysfunction, but the shrimps did not perform as well as in sea salt based on survival and growth. Apparently, L. vannamei could osmoregulate well in mixed salt environments, but the environments did not provide specific ions or proper ionic ratios to support other metabolic functions related to survival and growth. Dietary sea salt did not appear to be beneficial in low salinity sea salt or mixed salt environments..
