Pressure on power to deliver

Coal handling equipment presents a wide variety of challenges for power system suppliers. Yard equipment such as stacker reclaimers often has very long travel distances requiring 1000m or more of cable to be managed. On other equipment such as bucket wheel reclaimers and shuttle cars safety is a main consideration as the equipment is free ranging and keeping the cable out of the way of a moving machine can present a challenge. However as power feed technology increases, it is not just new plant that is able to take advantage of this trend. Last year, Germany's Stemmann Technik, for instance, completed a retrofit project on a bucket wheel excavator at Vattenfall Europe Mining AG's Jaenschwalde open cast mine in Germany. For this application Stemmann designed a special reeling system to manage the high 30kV power requirement. The cable itself is a Nexans NTSCGEWOEU design with a 3x70+2/50+6G50μm +6 G 9E/ 125μm 18/30kV configuration.
