When I joined Beverages & more! in the fall of 1995 as the company's import wine buyer, merlot was the "hot" varietal and merlot magic was more than just a buzz phrase. Merlot with its white wine partner, chardonnay, became the mainstay of weddings, book signifigs, and wines to have around the house. AC Nielsen, a firm that tracks laser-scanning sales in 3,000 supermarkets and large volume retail outlets nationwide reported that merlot became the best selling red varietal wine in U.S. supermarkets in 1999.
