Alan Mazal used to be a financial services guy before tie became a florist, so he knows a good investment when he sees one. And, for his money, one of the best returns on the dollar a shop will ever see comes from hosting an open house. His first experience with open houses arrived in early 2004, when he and his wife Brenda decided to invite the public in to see their Glendora, Calif., shop—Grand Florist—at its new location. Alan was at first skeptical about how well this might work. In fact, he worried that the open house would add up to a big expense with little or nothing to show for it in the end.
