Lyndon Fish Hatcheries: Family-owned trout hatchery markets eggs and fingerlings to domestic and international clients

In an increasingly corporate-driven industry, family-owned fish-farms have become few and far between. But there are exceptions: Lyndon Fish Hatcheries (LFHI) has been family owned and operated with increasing success since 2002. Based in New Dundee in southern Ontario, Canada, this rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) hatchery produces eggs, fingerlings, broodstock, and public fish-out stock. It operates three sites, two on adjacent properties in New Dundee and a third on Manitoulin Island Lyndon's main facility, Spring Valley, in New Dundee draws water at a consistent 10°C from eight wells from with ample water flows by gravity to the 467 m~3 broodstock facility. Production Manager Clarke Rieck says the "stress-free gravitational flow is icing onthe cake."
