In January-March, China nearly doubled coal imports quarter-on-quarter, having received around 96 million t of foreign products. Such a significant increase was mainly related to lower imports at the end of 2019 amid the exhaustion of annual coal import quotas, with external purchases plummeting since September. The Chinese authorities set annual import quotas to restrain purchases from abroad and support local suppliers.
