Polygonum istanbulicum Keskin sp. nov. (Polygonaceae) from Turkey

A new Polygonum L. species, P. istanbulicum Keskin, is described from the Istanbul province of Turkey and is compared with other allied species. In addition, an updated list of all Polygonum (s. 1.) species recorded from Turkey is provided. The firstsamples of the new species described in this article were collected from the Ba§ibiiyiik district of Maltepe/ Istanbul in 1995 by the author. However, it could not be established as a new species until the flora list of the Baibùyiik district was finished. The flora of this district, despite being only a small part of Istanbul city, consists of 532 taxa including 11 endemic species. Floras of the neighbouring countries (Halàcsy 1904, Hayek 1927, Komarov 1936, Rechinger and Schiman-Czeika 1968, Meikle 1985, Akeroyd 1986, Snogerup and Snogerup 1997) have been checked as well as specimens from numerous herbaria to ascertain that the species described here is really new to science.
