Pig strains (116) of Yersinia enterocolitica serotype O:3/biotype 4 were isolated from slaughterhouses in Greece and tested for Xba I restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) profiles by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The genetic profiles from pigs were compared to those from human clinical isolates of the same bio-serogroup. PFGE analysis revealed 2 different genetic profiles strain A1 (99.14%) and strain A2 (0.86%). A1 was similar to the unique genetic profile described in human clinical isolates previously. As this profile was derived exclusively from the pigs, this result supports the assumption that pigs seem to be the main reservoir of human pathogenic yersiniae.
