The current classification of the Nematodirinae, with 5 genera, Murielus, Rauschia, Nematodiroides, Nematodirus, and Nematodirella is based on a phylogeny generated from morphological characters. The present study evaluates the morphological phylogenetic position of the Nematodirella cameli using molecular methods. Sequences from The first and second internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1 and ITS-2, respectively) of the rDNA were used to infer the phylogenetic position of N. cameli among the Nematodirinae. Molecular data showed a closer relationship between the N. cameli and Nematodirus species. Interestingly, the data from the phylogenetic analyses (MP and NJ) indicate that Nematodirella may not be a distinct genus in Nematodirinae because of the closer phylogenetic relationship of N. cameli with the Nematodirus lineage. This finding is not supported by previous phylogenetic reconstructions based on morphological data. However, phylogenetic analysis needs more target sequences for Murielus, Rauschia, Nematodiroides and other Nematodirella species to test morphological concepts of defined genera in the Nematodirinae.
